AAC to MP3 Converter: what to know
AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is a lossy codec that generally sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate. It's the standard audio in MP4 videos, M4A files, Apple devices, YouTube and many streaming and broadcast systems. Raw .aac files, without an MPEG-4 wrapper, come from some recorders, radios and video tools.
This tool decodes AAC in your browser and encodes the sound as MP3 with LAME compiled to WebAssembly. Both .aac and .m4a files are accepted, since they hold the same codec in different wrappers. Your audio is processed on your device and never uploaded.
AAC is more efficient, so matching quality in MP3 usually takes a somewhat higher bitrate and a larger file. Converting from one lossy format to another always adds a little loss, which a generous bitrate keeps hard to hear. The reason to convert is compatibility: MP3 plays on nearly every old player, car stereo, phone system and app.
Popular uses
- Car stereos and MP3 players without AAC support
- Phone systems and hold music that require MP3
- Recordings from devices that save raw AAC
- Upload forms that only accept MP3
Tips for the best result
- Pick a bitrate at least as high as the AAC source.
- If the player supports AAC, keep the original; it's already efficient.
- Convert a batch and download it as one ZIP.
- Check the converted file in your car or player before converting a whole library.
