Open 7Z Files Online: what to know
7Z is the native format of 7-Zip, the free open-source archiver. It usually compresses better than ZIP thanks to the LZMA and LZMA2 algorithms, which is why software, game mods and large data sets are often shared as .7z files. Windows only recently started to open them itself, and many other devices still can't. This page unpacks 7Z archives in your browser, with nothing to install.
The archive is read by libarchive compiled to WebAssembly, running locally in a background thread so the page stays responsive. It supports LZMA, LZMA2, BZip2, Deflate and uncompressed 7Z archives, with names in any language. Your files never leave your device.
Most 7Z archives are solid: files are compressed together as one stream, which saves space but means reaching a file requires decompressing everything stored before it. Saving all files at once is therefore the efficient choice for big archives. Password-protected archives and split volumes (.7z.001, .7z.002) aren't supported yet.
Popular uses
- Opening software or game mod downloads shared as 7Z
- Unpacking data sets and backups compressed with 7-Zip
- Getting files out of a 7Z on a Mac or Chromebook
- Checking an archive's contents before downloading everything
Tips for the best result
- Save all files at once from a large solid archive; picking files one by one decompresses the start again each time.
- Archives that unpack to several gigabytes need a computer with plenty of free memory.
- If you need to share the files with someone without 7-Zip, convert the archive with 7Z to ZIP.
