Open RAR Files Online: what to know

RAR is the archive format of WinRAR. It compresses well and is common for large downloads, but Windows and macOS can't open it without extra software. This page opens RAR archives in your browser: the folders are listed with each file's size, and you save one file or all of them, without installing WinRAR or 7-Zip.

RAR is a proprietary format: anyone may read it, but only WinRAR's makers can create it. Reading is done by libarchive, a widely used open-source archive library, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs at near-native speed inside the page. Both RAR4 and RAR5 archives are supported, including solid archives, where files are compressed together as one stream.

Everything happens on your device, so the archive is never uploaded and there is no wait for a server. The limits are honest ones: encrypted RAR files and multi-part archives (part1.rar, part2.rar or .r00 files) can't be opened yet, and a RAR can't be created here. To share the contents with someone who doesn't have WinRAR, convert the archive to ZIP.

Popular uses

  • Opening a RAR download without installing an archiver
  • Getting files out of a RAR on a Mac, Chromebook or work laptop
  • Checking a RAR's contents before deciding what to keep

Tips for the best result

  • In a solid RAR, saving all files at once is barely slower than saving one file near the end.
  • If the archive came in several parts, join them with WinRAR or 7-Zip first; a single part can't be read alone.
  • Use RAR to ZIP to repack the archive for people who can't open RAR files.
  • Keep the RAR until you've checked the extracted files: extracting never changes the original.
