JSON to Excel: what to know

JSON is easy for programs to read but hard to scan by eye, and it doesn't open in a spreadsheet. This converter turns JSON into an Excel workbook (.xlsx) in your browser, so you can sort, filter and chart the data in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice.

An array of objects becomes one row per object, with a column for every key that appears in any object, in first-seen order. Nested objects are flattened into dotted columns such as address.city, lists of plain values are joined into one cell with "; " between them, and lists of objects are written into the cell as JSON text so nothing is lost. Numbers and booleans are stored as real Excel values, and strings stay text even when they look like numbers. Arrays of arrays, plain lists and an object wrapping one list of records work too, as do JSON Lines files.

The sheet is named Sheet1, the header row is bold and frozen, and columns are sized to their contents up to a maximum width. Excel limits a cell to 32,767 characters, so longer values are cut short and the converter tells you.

Popular uses

  • Reviewing API data in a spreadsheet
  • Handing JSON exports to colleagues who use Excel
  • Sorting and filtering app logs or analytics events
  • Building a quick report or pivot table from JSON

Tips for the best result

  • If you get a single row, your data is one object; the rows are probably in a list inside it.
  • Turn off flattening to keep nested objects as JSON text in one column.
  • Check the preview to see the columns before downloading.
