Excel to JSON: what to know

Excel is where much business data lives, and JSON is what code reads. This converter opens an .xlsx workbook in your browser and turns the sheet you pick into a JSON array, with no upload and no add-in.

The first row of the sheet is used as the header, and each row below it becomes an object with those names as keys. Empty or repeated header names are renamed so every key is unique. Numbers and booleans keep their types, while text stays text. Formula cells give the last result Excel saved, rich text becomes plain text, hyperlinks keep their display text and error cells keep codes such as #N/A. Dates become ISO 8601 strings, for example 2024-01-05 for a date and 2024-01-05T13:30:00 when there's a time, because JSON has no date type. Empty cells become empty strings and fully blank rows are skipped.

Turn the header option off to get each row as an array instead, which suits sheets without a header row. Old Excel 97-2003 .xls files and password-protected workbooks can't be read in the browser; re-save them as unprotected .xlsx files first.

Popular uses

  • Turning a product or price list into data for a website
  • Building app content, translations or config from a sheet
  • Preparing spreadsheet data for an API import
  • Creating test fixtures from a sample workbook

Tips for the best result

  • Pick the sheet from the list when your workbook has more than one.
  • Keep header names short and unique; they become your JSON keys.
  • Turn off typed values if you need every cell as a string.
  • Use 0 indentation for a compact file, or 2 or 4 to read it easily.
