Word to Text: what to know
Sometimes you only need the words. This tool opens a Word document in your browser and writes its text to a plain .txt file, saved as UTF-8 so every language and emoji survives. Nothing is uploaded, which makes it safe for contracts, CVs and internal documents.
The text stays readable rather than becoming one long block. Headings sit on their own lines, paragraphs are separated by a single blank line, bulleted items start with a dash and numbered items with their number, with nested items indented two spaces. Tables become one line per row with the cells separated by tabs, so you can paste them straight into a spreadsheet. Tabs inside paragraphs are kept, too.
Everything that isn't text is dropped: fonts, bold and italics, colors, images, headers, footers and comments. Footnotes are kept as a numbered list at the end.
Popular uses
- Pasting a document into a form, chat or code editor without formatting
- Counting words or running text through other tools
- Feeding document text into scripts, search indexes or AI tools
- Keeping a lightweight, future-proof copy of important documents
Tips for the best result
- Open the .txt in any editor; if accents look wrong, make sure the editor reads it as UTF-8.
- For text with structure kept as markup, use Word to Markdown instead.
- Old .doc files need to be saved as .docx in Word or LibreOffice first.
