Unzip Files Online: what to know
ZIP is the most widely used archive format: one file that holds many files and folders, each usually compressed with Deflate. This tool opens a ZIP inside your browser, shows its folders as a tree with the size of every file, and lets you save a single file or everything inside. Your archive is read from your own device and never uploaded, so it works the same for holiday photos and confidential contracts.
Only the ZIP's central directory, the index at the end of the file, is read to list it, so even a large archive opens quickly. A file is decompressed only when you save it, and its CRC-32 checksum is verified so a damaged download is reported instead of silently saving a broken file. ZIP64 archives (over 4 GB or 65,535 entries), names stored as UTF-8 and names in the old DOS character set are all handled, and paths that try to climb out of the folder (../) are cleaned up.
ZIPs protected with classic ZIP encryption list their contents right away and ask for the password when you extract. AES-encrypted ZIPs and archives using rarer compression methods are read by libarchive, which supports most of them, though AES encryption isn't available in the browser yet.
Popular uses
- Opening an email attachment on a computer where you can't install software
- Pulling one document out of a large project archive
- Checking what a downloaded ZIP contains before unpacking it
- Unzipping files on a Chromebook or a shared computer
Tips for the best result
- Use the tree to find files: folders show how many files they hold and their total size.
- Save single files when you only need one or two; it's faster than unpacking the whole archive.
- If a file is reported as damaged, download the ZIP again: the checksum shows its data didn't arrive intact.
- Very large archives need free memory; on a phone, extract the files you need one by one.
