PNG to JPG Converter: what to know
PNG is a lossless format: it records every pixel exactly, which is perfect for screenshots and graphics but makes photos large. JPG is a lossy format designed for photographs. It discards detail the eye is unlikely to notice, so a photo saved as JPG is usually far smaller than the same photo as PNG.
When you convert, the PNG is decoded in your browser and the pixels are encoded as JPG at the quality you choose. JPG has no transparency, so any transparent or semi-transparent pixels are blended onto a white background. Embedded color data is applied during decoding so the JPG looks the same on screen. The file never leaves your device.
The saving depends on the content. A photo or detailed illustration shrinks dramatically. A screenshot full of text, flat color and hard edges compresses less well as JPG and may show soft or blotchy edges around letters, because JPG is built for smooth photographic detail. For those images, PNG or lossless WebP is often the better home.
Popular uses
- Photos that were saved as PNG by a phone or editor
- Email attachments that need to be smaller
- Upload forms and print services that ask for JPG
- Product photos for marketplaces
Tips for the best result
- A quality setting in the high 80s is a safe starting point for photos.
- Keep logos and screenshots with text as PNG, since JPG blurs sharp edges.
- If you need a transparent background, convert to WebP instead of JPG.
