Free Video Converter: what to know
A video file is a container, such as MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, that holds a video stream, usually an audio stream, and some metadata. Each stream is compressed with a codec: H.264, HEVC (H.265), VP9 or AV1 for video, and AAC, Opus or MP3 for audio. Whether a file plays on a device depends on both the container and the codecs inside it.
This converter runs in your browser with WebCodecs, the browser's built-in video encoders and decoders, and the Mediabunny library for reading and writing containers. When the target container can hold the existing codecs, streams are copied without re-encoding, which is fast and lossless. When they can't, the video is decoded and encoded again, which is slower and slightly lossy.
WebCodecs is available in current Chrome and Edge, Safari 16.4 or newer, and Firefox 130 or newer. Which codecs can be decoded and encoded depends on the browser and the device, especially for HEVC, which often relies on hardware support. Long or high-resolution videos need a lot of memory and time, so a phone or older computer may struggle with very large files.
Popular uses
- Making videos play on phones, TVs and in editors
- Turning screen recordings into shareable MP4 files
- Preparing WebM versions of videos for a website
- Converting camera and phone footage between formats
Tips for the best result
- Choose MP4 with H.264 when you don't know where the video will be played.
- Plug in your laptop for long conversions, since encoding is hard work.
- Keep the tab in the foreground; some browsers slow down background tabs.
- Trim the video first if you only need part of it.
