GB to MB: what to know
Gigabytes are the usual unit for phone storage, data plans and downloads, while many individual files are measured in megabytes. In SI decimal units, which drive manufacturers, mobile carriers and macOS use, 1 GB = 1000 MB, so MB = GB × 1000. A 64 GB phone holds 64,000 MB, and a 2.3 GB game update is 2,300 MB.
The binary alternative uses powers of two, as defined in IEC 80000-13: 1 gibibyte (GiB) is 1024 mebibytes (MiB), and 1 MiB is 1,048,576 bytes. Under this convention 2 GiB is 2,048 MiB. Converting between conventions changes the numbers: 1 GB (decimal) is 953.67 MiB.
The two systems are mixed in everyday software. Windows shows binary values but writes "GB" and "MB", so a 128 GB memory card appears as about 119 "GB" (119.2 GiB). Mobile carriers bill in decimal: a 5 GB plan is 5,000 MB of data. RAM is built in binary sizes, so 8 GB of RAM is 8 GiB, or 8,192 MiB. Choose GiB and MiB in the unit list for binary results.
Popular uses
- Working out how many files of a given size fit on a drive
- Splitting a data plan into daily or weekly megabytes
- Comparing app and update sizes
- Converting RAM and storage specs
Tips for the best result
- Network speeds use bits: 1 Gbit/s is 125 MB/s at most.
- If Windows and macOS disagree on a file's size, one is binary and one decimal.
- Pick MiB to match what Windows calls MB.
