TTF to WOFF2 Converter: what to know
TTF (TrueType) is the font format desktop systems install, but it is uncompressed and heavy to send over the web. WOFF2 (Web Open Font Format 2) is the same font packed for browsers: its tables are compressed with Brotli and the TrueType outlines are stored in a more compact encoding, so the file is usually much smaller than the TTF. Every current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari supports WOFF2.
This converter runs Google's reference WOFF2 encoder, compiled to WebAssembly, inside your browser. The font is never uploaded, and the result contains exactly the glyphs, metrics, kerning and OpenType features of the TTF; a browser unpacks it to an equivalent font. The converter also shows the font's family, style, version and glyph count so you can check you picked the right file.
Converting doesn't change what you're allowed to do with a font. Fonts under open licenses such as the SIL Open Font License can be self-hosted freely, while many commercial fonts need a web license. Font collections (.ttc) aren't supported; convert the individual fonts.
Popular uses
- Self-hosting fonts instead of loading them from a third-party font service
- Cutting font weight from a website to improve page speed
- Preparing fonts for an app or e-book that loads WOFF2
Tips for the best result
- Reference it in CSS with @font-face { font-family: "My Font"; src: url("/fonts/my-font.woff2") format("woff2"); font-display: swap; }.
- Add one @font-face rule per weight and style, with font-weight and font-style set to match.
- Preload the font used above the fold with <link rel="preload" as="font" type="font/woff2" crossorigin>.
- Serve the file with the font/woff2 content type and a long cache lifetime.
