Create a ZIP File: what to know

A ZIP file packs many files into one, so they are easier to email, upload or store, and usually smaller. This page builds the ZIP in your browser: add files, choose a compression level and save the archive. The files are read from your device and never uploaded, which makes it safe for private documents and keeps it fast on slow connections.

Compression uses Deflate, the method every unzip tool understands, so the result opens with a double-click on Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone and Android. File names are stored as UTF-8 with the flag that tells unzip tools so, which keeps accented and non-Latin names correct. Files that are already compressed, such as JPG, PNG, MP4, MP3, WOFF2 and other ZIP files, are stored without recompressing: deflating them again costs time and saves almost nothing.

If two files share a name, the second is renamed (report (2).pdf) rather than overwritten, comparing names without regard to capital letters so the ZIP unpacks cleanly on Windows and macOS too. The archive is assembled in memory in the classic ZIP format, which caps it at 4 GB in total.

Popular uses

  • Bundling documents to attach to a single email
  • Sending a set of photos or design files in one download
  • Shrinking text, CSV and log files before uploading them
  • Packing files for a website or app that only accepts one upload

Tips for the best result

  • Text, spreadsheets and code compress well; photos and videos barely shrink, so don't expect a smaller file from them.
  • Choose maximum compression for text-heavy archives you'll share widely, and the default for everything else.
  • Keep each ZIP well under the size limit of the service you'll send it through.
