RAR to ZIP Converter: what to know
RAR archives need WinRAR or another extra app to open, while ZIP files open on practically every computer and phone without installing anything. This converter unpacks a RAR in your browser and repacks the same files and folders as a ZIP, so you can pass the contents on to anyone.
The RAR is read by libarchive compiled to WebAssembly, which supports RAR4 and RAR5 archives, and the ZIP is written with standard Deflate compression. The files inside come out byte for byte the same; only the container changes. Files that are already compressed, like photos and videos, are stored in the ZIP as they are. Everything stays on your device, from reading the RAR to saving the ZIP.
A few things don't carry over. The original modification dates aren't available through the WebAssembly reader, so the files get the date of the conversion, and RAR-only extras such as recovery records and archive comments are dropped. Encrypted and multi-part RAR archives can't be converted yet. Expect the ZIP to be somewhat larger than the RAR, since RAR usually compresses better.
