Free Image Converter: what to know

Image formats store the same picture in different ways. JPG uses lossy compression tuned for photos, so files are small but some fine detail is discarded. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges. WebP and AVIF are newer formats that can be lossy or lossless and usually produce smaller files than JPG or PNG at similar quality.

This converter opens your image in the browser, decodes it to plain pixels and encodes those pixels again in the format you choose. Common formats are decoded by the browser itself; HEIC photos from iPhones are decoded by a WebAssembly build of libheif that runs inside the page, so no extra software is needed. Nothing is uploaded: the file is read from your disk and the result is saved straight back to it.

Converting changes how pixels are stored, not how many there are. Transparent areas become white when the target is JPG, which has no alpha channel. Saving to a lossy format applies a quality setting, and going from a lossy format to a lossless one keeps the existing compression artifacts rather than removing them. Very large images need a lot of memory, so phones may be slower than computers.

Popular uses

  • Opening iPhone HEIC photos on Windows or Android
  • Turning WebP or AVIF downloads into JPG for older apps
  • Making smaller WebP versions of images for a website
  • Meeting format rules on upload forms and marketplaces

Tips for the best result

  • Use JPG for photos, PNG for screenshots and transparency, and WebP for web pages.
  • Keep your originals; every lossy save discards a little more detail.
  • If the result is larger than the original, the original format probably suited that image better.
  • Convert a whole folder in one go and download the results as a ZIP.
