WebM to MP4 Converter: what to know
WebM is an open video format built for the web. It usually pairs VP8 or VP9 video, sometimes AV1, with Opus or Vorbis audio. Browsers, screen recorders and many web apps save WebM by default, but plenty of video editors, phones, presentation apps and social platforms expect MP4 instead.
MP4 players generally expect H.264 video and AAC audio, so converting WebM to MP4 normally means re-encoding: the VP8 or VP9 video is decoded and encoded again as H.264, and the Opus audio as AAC. That takes longer than a simple container change and is slightly lossy, but the result plays almost everywhere.
The work happens in your browser with WebCodecs, so recordings never leave your device. It needs a browser with WebCodecs, such as current Chrome or Edge, Safari 16.4 or newer, or Firefox 130 or newer, and an H.264 encoder, which most devices provide. Long or high-resolution recordings take more time and memory.
Popular uses
- Editing browser or screen recordings in a video editor
- Sharing recordings on social platforms and in chat apps
- Adding clips to presentations
- Playing web videos on phones and TVs
Tips for the best result
- Trim the recording before converting to cut the processing time.
- Keep the tab in the foreground while long videos convert.
- If audio is missing, check that the original WebM has a sound track.
- Check the MP4 plays in the app you need before deleting the WebM recording.
