Unit Converter: what to know
This unit converter covers ten common kinds of measurement: length, weight, temperature, volume, area, speed, time, data storage, pressure and energy. Pick a category, choose the two units and type a number. The result updates as you type, along with the formula behind it and a table of common values, so you can check the math rather than take it on trust.
Every factor is the exact legal definition, not a rounded approximation. The inch is 2.54 cm and the pound 0.45359237 kg under the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, the US gallon is 231 cubic inches (3.785411784 L) per NIST Handbook 44, the UK gallon is 4.54609 L, the standard atmosphere is 101,325 Pa and the electronvolt is 1.602176634 × 10⁻¹⁹ J under the 2019 SI. Temperatures use the exact formulas: K = °C + 273.15 and °F = °C × 9/5 + 32. Results are calculated to 15 significant digits, so 1 inch shows as 2.54 cm, never 2.5400000000000005.
A few units have more than one meaning, and the converter labels them. Cups, pints, quarts and gallons are US customary unless marked UK. A calorie (cal) is the thermochemical calorie of 4.184 J, while kcal is the food Calorie. In data storage, kB, MB and GB are decimal (1000-based) and KiB, MiB and GiB are binary (1024-based), as defined by IEC 80000-13.
Popular uses
- Following a recipe written in cups, ounces or grams
- Reading a weather forecast or oven setting in °F or °C
- Checking a product's size or weight in your own units
- Comparing drive sizes, file sizes and data plans
- Homework and lab work that needs exact conversion factors
Tips for the best result
- Paste numbers with thousands separators like 1,250.5 or 1 250; they are read correctly.
- To convert the other way, swap the from and to units.
- For area and volume, convert the area or volume units directly instead of squaring a length factor by hand.
- Results show up to 10 significant digits, and the formula shows the exact factor used.
