JPG to PNG Converter: what to know
JPG is the standard format for photos. It uses lossy compression, which keeps files small by throwing away fine detail and can leave faint blocky artifacts. PNG is lossless: whatever pixels go in come out exactly the same, and it can store transparency.
Converting a JPG to PNG decodes the JPG in your browser and writes those exact pixels into a PNG. Nothing more is lost in the process, which is why PNG is a good working format when you plan to edit an image repeatedly: each later save stays lossless instead of adding another round of JPG compression.
What conversion can't do is restore detail the JPG already discarded. The PNG looks identical to the JPG, artifacts included, and it is usually several times larger because lossless compression is much less aggressive on photos. The background also stays solid; a JPG has no transparent pixels to carry over, so removing a background is a separate editing step.
Popular uses
- Apps, templates and upload forms that only accept PNG
- Editing an image several times without further JPG loss
- Preparing an image before removing its background in an editor
- Design and presentation assets
Tips for the best result
- Only convert when you need PNG; for sharing photos, the JPG is smaller.
- Start from the highest-quality JPG you have, since artifacts carry over.
- Do your edits on the PNG and export to JPG or WebP once at the end.
