TTF to WOFF Converter: what to know
WOFF (Web Open Font Format 1.0) was the first font format designed for the web. It wraps an ordinary TrueType or OpenType font and compresses each of its tables with zlib, the same compression used in ZIP files, so the font downloads faster while staying exactly the same once unpacked. WOFF2 has since replaced it as the first choice, but WOFF remains the fallback for older browsers.
This converter writes WOFF following the W3C specification in your browser: every table is compressed separately (and stored uncompressed when compression wouldn't help), aligned and listed with its original checksum and length, and the font version is copied into the WOFF header. Converting back gives the same tables byte for byte. Nothing is uploaded.
WOFF also works for OpenType fonts with CFF outlines, which keep their outlines and hinting. Fonts are only as free as their license: check that the font you convert may be used on the web.
Popular uses
- Adding a fallback for very old browsers next to a WOFF2 font
- Supporting web views or e-book readers that accept WOFF but not WOFF2
- Delivering fonts to systems built around WOFF 1.0
Tips for the best result
- List both formats in one rule, WOFF2 first: src: url("font.woff2") format("woff2"), url("font.woff") format("woff").
- If you only target current browsers, WOFF2 alone is enough and smaller.
- Serve WOFF files with the font/woff content type.
