M4A to MP3 Converter: what to know
M4A is an audio file in the MPEG-4 container, almost always holding AAC audio. It is the default for iPhone Voice Memos, Apple Music purchases, many podcast apps and lots of recorders. AAC is efficient and sounds good, but some older MP3 players, car stereos, phone systems and upload forms only accept MP3.
Converting decodes the AAC audio in your browser and encodes it as MP3 with LAME compiled to WebAssembly, at the bitrate you choose. Both AAC and MP3 are lossy, so this is a second round of compression; choosing a bitrate at least as high as the original keeps the difference hard to hear. Files are processed on your device and never uploaded.
Only unprotected files can be converted. Purchases without copy protection and your own recordings work fine, but tracks protected by DRM, such as songs downloaded for offline listening in a streaming subscription, can't be decoded by a browser. Some tags such as title and artist may not carry over, so check the result in your player.
Popular uses
- Playing iPhone voice memos on any device
- Car stereos and older MP3 players
- Upload forms and phone systems that want MP3
- Sharing recordings with people on Windows or Android
Tips for the best result
- Match or exceed the original bitrate to avoid audible loss.
- Voice memos are usually mono, so a modest bitrate is plenty.
- Re-tag files in your music player if titles are missing.
