Excel to CSV: what to know
An Excel workbook (.xlsx) can hold many sheets, formulas, formatting and merged cells. A CSV file holds just one table of plain values, which is why databases, import forms and scripts ask for it. This converter opens the workbook in your browser, reads the sheet you choose and writes its values as CSV.
Each cell is written as the value you see in Excel. Formulas give the last result Excel calculated and saved in the file, rich text loses its formatting, hyperlinks keep their display text, and error cells keep codes such as #N/A. Dates become ISO 8601 text (2024-01-05, or 2024-01-05T13:30:00 with a time), which sorts correctly and is read the same way everywhere. A merged range keeps its value in the top-left cell and leaves the rest empty. Blank rows are skipped and trailing empty columns are trimmed.
Only modern .xlsx files are supported. Old Excel 97-2003 .xls files and password-protected workbooks can't be read in the browser, so re-save them as .xlsx without a password first.
Popular uses
- Importing a spreadsheet into a database, CRM or online store
- Sending data to a tool that only accepts CSV
- Extracting one sheet from a large workbook
- Making a version of a sheet that works with Git diffs
Tips for the best result
- Each sheet needs its own CSV: switch the sheet and download again.
- If a formula cell comes out empty, open and save the file in Excel so the result is stored.
- Number formats such as currency symbols aren't exported, only the underlying number.
- Pick a semicolon delimiter for spreadsheet apps in European locales.
