HEIC to JPG Converter: what to know
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads. It stores images compressed with HEVC, the same codec used for modern video, which keeps photo quality high at roughly half the size of a comparable JPG. The catch is compatibility: Windows needs an extra codec, many Android phones and websites can't open it, and lots of upload forms reject it.
This converter decodes HEIC files with a WebAssembly build of libheif that runs inside the page, so it works in any modern browser without installing anything. The decoded photo is then encoded as JPG, the format every device, app and website accepts. Your photos are processed on your own device and never uploaded.
HEIC can hold extras that JPG can't, such as depth maps, multiple images in one file and 10-bit color. The JPG keeps the main photo in standard 8-bit color. Some HEIC files from newer phones contain several images, and converting the primary one gives you the photo you see in your gallery. Large batches of high-resolution photos take a little time and memory.
