Markdown to HTML: what to know
Markdown is quick to write but needs converting before a browser can show it. This tool renders Markdown to HTML in your browser using GitHub Flavored Markdown, the dialect most people know from GitHub: pipe tables, task lists with checkboxes, ~~strikethrough~~, fenced code blocks and plain web addresses that turn into links automatically.
Safety comes first. Raw HTML typed into the Markdown is escaped and shown as text rather than passed through, links that use javascript: are removed, and the output goes through a strict allowlist, so no scripts, event handlers or inline styles can reach the page. That makes it a good fit for content from other people, such as comments, submissions or imported notes.
You can download a complete page with a title and a small readable stylesheet, or just the HTML fragment to paste into a template. A language named after a code fence is kept as a class, ready for a syntax highlighter.
Popular uses
- Turning a README or notes file into a page you can share
- Producing HTML for a CMS that doesn't accept Markdown
- Previewing what a Markdown file will look like before publishing
- Converting documentation for a simple static website
Tips for the best result
- Leave a blank line between paragraphs; a single line break stays inside the same paragraph.
- Add a separator row (| --- | --- |) under the first row of a table or it won't be recognized.
- Choose the fragment option when the HTML goes into an existing page layout.
