Gallons to Liters: what to know
The US gallon is the standard unit for gasoline, milk and water in the United States. NIST Handbook 44 defines it as 231 cubic inches, which is exactly 3.785411784 liters, so liters = US gallons × 3.785411784. The gallon divides into 4 quarts, 8 pints, 16 cups or 128 fluid ounces.
Worked examples: a 15-gallon fuel tank holds 56.78 L; a 5-gallon water jug is 18.93 L; a 55-gallon drum is 208.2 L; a gallon of milk is 3.785 L. To compare fuel prices, divide the price per gallon by 3.785411784 to get a price per liter.
The imperial (UK) gallon is a different unit, exactly 4.54609 liters under the UK Weights and Measures Act 1985. Older British recipes, UK fuel economy figures in miles per gallon and some Canadian sources use it. 10 imperial gallons is 45.46 L, against 37.85 L for 10 US gallons. This page converts US gallons; the full unit converter lists UK gallons too.
