Markdown to Word: what to know

Markdown is great for writing and terrible for sending to someone who lives in Word. This tool turns Markdown into a real .docx in your browser, not a web page renamed. Headings use Word's built-in Heading 1 to Heading 6 styles, so they appear in the navigation pane and in a table of contents. Bullets and numbered lists are real Word lists, nested up to nine levels, and tables are Word tables with borders and a shaded header row.

Inline formatting carries over: bold, italics, strikethrough, inline code in Consolas, and links as clickable hyperlinks. Code blocks use a paragraph style named Code and quotes use one named Quote, so you can change how all of them look in one place. Pages are US Letter with 1-inch margins and Calibri 11 text.

Images embedded as data: URIs are placed in the document and scaled to the page width. Linked images are left out, since nothing is downloaded, and raw HTML in the Markdown is kept as visible text.

Popular uses

  • Sending documentation or a report to colleagues who use Word
  • Submitting writing drafted in Markdown where .docx is required
  • Turning meeting notes into an editable document
  • Starting a formatted Word file from a plain-text outline

Tips for the best result

  • Start each section with # headings so Word builds a navigable outline.
  • Numbered lists in Word always start at 1; renumber in Word if a list should start elsewhere.
  • Open the file and use Word's Styles pane to restyle headings, code and quotes in one go.
