Word to Markdown: what to know

Markdown is the plain-text format behind README files, wikis, documentation sites and note apps like Obsidian. This converter reads a Word document in your browser and writes Markdown: # headings from Word's heading styles, - bullets and numbered lists with nesting, **bold**, _italic_, ~~strikethrough~~, [links](url) and fenced code blocks.

Tables become GitHub Flavored Markdown pipe tables. Markdown tables always have a header row, so the first row of each Word table is used as the header. A cell can only hold one line in a pipe table, so paragraphs inside a cell are joined with spaces, and any pipe character in a cell is escaped so it doesn't break the table.

Images are kept as data: URIs by default, which makes a self-contained file but long lines. Many people prefer to leave images out and add them as separate files. Underline, highlighting, colors and fonts have no Markdown syntax, so that text arrives plain.

Popular uses

  • Moving documentation from Word into a Git repository
  • Publishing Word content on a static site such as Hugo, Jekyll or Astro
  • Importing notes into Obsidian, Notion or another Markdown editor
  • Reviewing document changes with plain-text diffs

Tips for the best result

  • Apply Word's real heading styles before converting so each heading gets the right number of # signs.
  • Keep tables simple: merged cells and lists inside cells don't fit pipe tables.
  • Code formatted with a paragraph style named Code becomes a fenced code block.
