kJ to kcal: what to know

Kilojoules (kJ) are the SI unit of energy used on food labels in Australia and New Zealand and, alongside calories, across the UK and EU. Kilocalories (kcal) are the familiar diet "Calories". The thermochemical calorie is defined as exactly 4.184 joules (NIST SP 811), so 1 kcal is 4.184 kJ and kcal = kJ ÷ 4.184.

Worked examples: a chocolate bar with 1,000 kJ has 239 kcal; a breakfast of 2,000 kJ is 478 kcal; the 8,700 kJ daily reference intake used on Australian labels is 2,079 kcal. In the other direction, a 500 kcal meal is 2,092 kJ.

Several calories exist. The International Table calorie is 4.1868 J, and nutrition science has historically used values near 4.18 to 4.2. This converter uses the thermochemical calorie (4.184 J), which is standard in nutrition and chemistry, and the result differs from the IT value by less than 0.1%. A Calorie with a capital C on US labels is the same as a kcal.

Popular uses

  • Reading Australian, UK and EU food labels in calories
  • Tracking energy intake in a calorie-based app
  • Comparing exercise energy figures
  • Converting nutrition data for recipes

Tips for the best result

  • Quick estimate: divide kJ by 4.
  • Label values are rounded, so the kJ and kcal shown may not convert exactly.
  • Use joules or kWh in the full converter for physics and electricity.
  • Small calories (cal) are a thousand times smaller than food Calories; check which one a source means.
