MOV to MP4 Converter: what to know
MOV is Apple's QuickTime container, used by iPhones, Macs and many cameras. MP4 is the closely related MPEG-4 container and the most widely supported video format on Windows, Android, smart TVs and websites. The two can hold the same codecs, so a MOV often needs only a change of container to become an MP4.
When your MOV holds H.264 video and AAC audio, the streams are copied into the MP4 without re-encoding, so the conversion is quick and the quality is unchanged. Newer iPhones record HEVC (H.265) by default; that is re-encoded to H.264 for the widest compatibility, which takes longer and is a lossy step, though at a quality close to the original.
Everything happens in your browser with WebCodecs, so your videos are never uploaded. Decoding HEVC depends on your device: Safari supports it, and Chrome and Edge do on hardware with HEVC support. Long 4K clips need plenty of memory and processing time, especially on phones.
Popular uses
- Playing iPhone videos on Windows PCs and Android phones
- Uploading clips to sites that only accept MP4
- Editing in software that prefers MP4
- Sharing videos in chat apps that reject MOV
Tips for the best result
- Set your iPhone camera to Most Compatible to record H.264 from the start.
- If HEVC decoding fails, try Safari or a device with HEVC hardware support.
- Trim long clips before converting to save time.
- Keep the tab in the foreground while long videos convert.
