HTML to Markdown: what to know
HTML is precise but noisy to edit by hand. This converter turns HTML into clean Markdown in your browser: headings become # lines, lists become - or 1. items, emphasis becomes ** and _, code blocks become fenced blocks, and links and images keep their addresses. Drop a saved web page or an .html export and only the body is converted.
Everything that isn't content is removed first: scripts, styles, the head section, forms, iframes and embedded media. Inline styles and classes are dropped as well, so a page full of wrapper divs and spans comes out as straightforward text. Links that use javascript: are removed for safety.
Tables become GitHub-style pipe tables. The first row becomes the header, short rows are padded with empty cells, pipe characters inside cells are escaped and line breaks inside a cell are joined. Very complex tables with merged cells may need tidying by hand.
Popular uses
- Moving blog posts from an old CMS to a Markdown-based site
- Saving articles as Markdown notes for Obsidian or a wiki
- Converting HTML documentation into a Git-friendly format
- Cleaning up HTML exported from another tool
Tips for the best result
- Delete menus and footers from the result; they're part of the page body, so they come through as text.
- Relative links and image paths stay relative, so fix them if the Markdown will live elsewhere.
- For pasting into Word instead, use HTML to Word.
