FLAC to MP3 Converter: what to know
FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) compresses audio without losing anything, so a FLAC file sounds exactly like the original recording at roughly half the size of WAV. It is popular for CD rips and high-resolution downloads. MP3 is lossy and much smaller, and it plays on almost every phone, car stereo and portable player, which FLAC does not.
The tool decodes your FLAC in the browser and encodes it as MP3 with LAME compiled to WebAssembly. Because FLAC is lossless, it is the best possible starting point for an MP3. High-resolution FLAC files with higher sample rates or bit depths are converted to standard MP3 settings, which can't carry that extra resolution. Nothing is uploaded.
At a high bitrate, most listeners won't notice a difference on everyday equipment. Since MP3 is lossy, keep your FLAC files as the master copy and create MP3s for convenience. Metadata such as titles, artists and album art may not all be carried over, so check the result in your music player.
Popular uses
- Loading a music library onto a phone or player without FLAC support
- Car stereos that only read MP3
- Saving space on portable devices
- Sharing tracks with people on any device
Tips for the best result
- Choose a high bitrate for music; FLAC sources deserve it.
- Never delete your FLAC originals after converting.
- Convert albums in one batch and download them as a ZIP.
