AVIF to JPG Converter: what to know
AVIF is an image format built on the AV1 video codec. It compresses extremely well, supports transparency and high dynamic range, and is increasingly used by websites and image CDNs. When you save an image from such a site, you may end up with an .avif file that your photo viewer, editor or an upload form doesn't recognize.
This converter decodes the AVIF in your browser and encodes the pixels as a standard JPG, which opens practically everywhere. Transparent areas are filled with white because JPG has no alpha channel. HDR or wide-gamut AVIF images are converted to standard color, so very bright highlights may look slightly different from how they appear on an HDR screen.
AVIF is usually more efficient than JPG, so expect the JPG to be larger for the same picture. Both formats are lossy, so a high quality setting is a good idea to avoid adding visible artifacts. Decoding AVIF relies on the browser's built-in support, which all current major browsers have. Your file stays on your device throughout.
Popular uses
- Images saved from websites that serve AVIF
- Editing in software without AVIF support
- Upload forms and marketplaces that require JPG
- Sharing pictures with people on older devices
Tips for the best result
- Use a high quality setting, since the AVIF was already compressed.
- Convert to PNG instead if you need to keep a transparent background.
- If your browser can't open an AVIF, updating it usually fixes that.
