Compress Audio Files: what to know
An audio file's size depends mainly on its bitrate and its length. Uncompressed WAV and lossless FLAC use far more data per second than a lossy format like MP3 needs, and many recorders and apps save MP3s at a higher bitrate than speech or casual listening requires.
This tool decodes your audio in the browser and re-encodes it as MP3 with LAME compiled to WebAssembly at the bitrate you choose. Lower bitrates give smaller files with less detail. Converting stereo speech to mono also helps, since a voice recording rarely benefits from two channels. Your files never leave your device.
Compression works best on WAV, FLAC and high-bitrate files. Re-encoding an MP3 at the same or a higher bitrate costs quality without saving space, so pick a bitrate below the original. Because MP3 is lossy, the detail removed can't be restored later, so keep the original if you might need it.
Popular uses
- Fitting recordings under email attachment limits
- Sending voice notes and interviews in chat apps
- Meeting upload limits on course and job portals
- Saving storage on phones and laptops
Tips for the best result
- Use a low bitrate for speech and a higher one for music.
- Trim silence and unneeded sections first; shorter files are smaller.
- Listen to the result on headphones before sending it.
- Convert stereo speech to mono where possible for a further saving without audible loss.
