MP3 to M4A Converter: what to know
M4A is an MPEG-4 audio file holding AAC, the codec Apple uses throughout its devices and apps. AAC is a lossy codec that generally sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate. M4A files can also carry tags and artwork, and iPhone ringtones are AAC files with an .m4r extension.
This tool decodes the MP3 in your browser and encodes it as AAC using the browser's built-in encoder through WebCodecs, then wraps it in an M4A file. AAC encoding support varies by browser and operating system; most current versions of Chrome, Edge and Safari provide it. If your browser lacks an AAC encoder, the tool tells you instead of failing silently.
Converting from MP3 to AAC is a lossy-to-lossy step, so it can't improve quality and adds a little loss of its own. Use a bitrate similar to or higher than the MP3's. The main reasons to convert are an app or device that prefers M4A, or making an iPhone ringtone. Your audio never leaves your device.
Popular uses
- Making iPhone ringtones
- Apps and workflows that expect M4A
- Adding audio to Apple projects and libraries
- Matching the format of an existing M4A collection
Tips for the best result
- Trim a ringtone to under 40 seconds before converting, then rename it to .m4r.
- Don't convert MP3s to M4A to save space; the gain is small and quality drops.
- If AAC encoding isn't available, try current Chrome, Edge or Safari.
