MP3 to OGG Converter: what to know
OGG is an open, royalty-free container used for audio in games, web apps and open-source software. It usually holds Vorbis or Opus. Opus is a modern codec with excellent quality at low bitrates, widely used for voice and streaming, and supported by every current major browser for playback.
This tool decodes the MP3 in your browser and encodes it as Opus in an OGG file, using the browser's built-in encoder through WebCodecs. Encoder support varies by browser, and if yours has no Opus encoder the tool tells you. Your files never leave your device.
MP3 and Opus are both lossy, so converting compresses the audio a second time; it won't sound better than the MP3, and a sensible bitrate keeps the extra loss small. Some older players and game engines only support OGG Vorbis, not Opus, so check that the program you're targeting plays the result before converting a whole library.
Popular uses
- Sound effects and music for game engines
- Audio for web apps and browser games
- Open-source projects that avoid patented formats
- Smaller voice clips for web delivery
Tips for the best result
- Test one file in your game engine or player before batch converting.
- Opus sounds good at lower bitrates than MP3 needs, especially for speech.
- Start from WAV or FLAC instead of MP3 when you have them.
- Keep your MP3 originals in case a target player turns out not to support Opus.
