MP3 to WAV Converter: what to know
MP3 is a compressed, lossy format: the encoder discarded some audio information to make the file small, and a player decodes it back to sound on the fly. WAV stores audio as uncompressed samples, which is what audio editors, samplers, DJ software, phone systems and many hardware devices handle most easily.
Converting decodes the MP3 in your browser and writes the samples into a WAV file. The WAV sounds exactly like the MP3, no better and no worse; the detail removed by MP3 compression can't be recovered. What you gain is a file that's easy to edit, and edits saved as WAV don't add another round of lossy compression.
WAV files are many times larger than MP3s of the same length, because nothing is compressed. Very long files therefore need more memory and disk space. Everything runs on your device, so your audio is never uploaded, and the result is saved straight from your browser.
Popular uses
- Editing audio in software that prefers WAV
- Loading samples into samplers and DJ gear
- Phone systems and IVR menus that require WAV
- Burning audio CDs with older software
Tips for the best result
- Do all your edits on the WAV, then export to MP3 once at the end.
- Check the sample rate your device or system requires.
- Don't convert just to improve sound quality; it won't.
- Expect each minute of stereo WAV to take roughly ten times the space of a typical MP3.
