MP4 to GIF Converter: what to know
GIF is a decades-old image format that supports simple animation and plays automatically almost everywhere: chat apps, documentation, email, issue trackers and slides. It has no sound, at most 256 colors per frame and very inefficient compression, which is why GIFs are best kept short and small.
This tool decodes your video in the browser with WebCodecs, samples frames at the frame rate you choose, scales them to your chosen width and encodes them as an animated GIF. Each frame is reduced to a palette of up to 256 colors, so smooth gradients and skin tones can look grainy or banded, while screen recordings and flat graphics look clean.
File size grows with every extra second, pixel and frame, so a short clip at a modest width and frame rate gives the best balance. The audio track is dropped, since GIF can't store sound. Everything stays on your device; nothing is uploaded. MOV, WebM and MKV clips work too when your browser can decode them.
Popular uses
- Showing a UI interaction in documentation or a bug report
- Reaction clips for chats and forums
- Short demos in email and slides
- Product feature previews in READMEs
Tips for the best result
- Keep clips to a few seconds and trim to the moment that matters.
- A lower frame rate shrinks the file a lot and still looks smooth for UI demos.
- Narrow widths keep GIFs light enough for chat apps and email.
- Where a platform supports it, a short muted MP4 is much smaller than a GIF.
