PNG to ICO Converter: what to know
ICO is the icon format used by Windows and by the classic favicon.ico file that browsers look for at the root of a website. An ICO file is a small container for icon images; the modern flavor stores a PNG inside, which every current version of Windows, macOS and every browser reads.
This tool fits your PNG within 256 × 256 pixels in the browser, centers it on a transparent square and stores it as a single PNG-based .ico file, with transparency kept. Browsers and Windows scale that one image down for tabs and shortcuts. Starting from a square PNG of at least 256 × 256 gives the cleanest result; a non-square image gets transparent padding, and a small one looks soft when scaled up.
Modern browsers also accept PNG and SVG favicons declared in the page's HTML, and many sites use those alongside a favicon.ico. The ICO remains the most widely compatible fallback, including for older browsers and tools that request /favicon.ico directly. Everything runs on your device, so your logo is never uploaded.
Popular uses
- Website favicons
- Windows desktop shortcut and folder icons
- Icons for desktop apps and installers
- Bookmarks and pinned site shortcuts
Tips for the best result
- Simplify detailed logos, since tiny sizes can't show fine lines or small text.
- Use a transparent background so the icon sits cleanly on any tab color.
- Check the icon in a browser tab before you publish, where it shows at about 16 pixels.
- Name the file favicon.ico and place it at your site's root.
