PNG to WebP Converter: what to know
PNG is lossless and supports transparency, so it is the usual format for logos, icons, UI images and screenshots. WebP supports transparency too, in both a lossless and a lossy mode, and usually stores the same image in fewer bytes, which makes it a strong choice for graphics on websites.
Lossless WebP keeps every pixel identical to the PNG and is typically smaller, which suits logos, interface graphics and anything with text. Lossy WebP lets you trade a little fidelity for a much smaller file, which suits photos and detailed illustrations saved as PNG. In both modes the alpha channel is preserved, including soft, semi-transparent edges.
The conversion runs in your browser with WebAssembly encoders, so your images stay on your device. Results vary with the content: flat graphics with few colors may already be very compact as PNG, while photos stored as PNG shrink dramatically. All current major browsers display WebP, but some older desktop tools don't open it, so keep the PNG source.
Popular uses
- Transparent logos and icons on websites
- Product cut-outs for online stores
- UI graphics and illustrations in web apps
- Photos that were saved as PNG by mistake
Tips for the best result
- Use lossless for logos and text, lossy for photos and painterly artwork.
- Check soft shadows and edges on both light and dark backgrounds.
- Keep the PNG as your editable master copy.
- Compare lossless WebP with the original PNG size; very simple graphics may gain little.
