Trim Audio Files: what to know
Trimming keeps one continuous section of a recording and removes everything before and after it. It's the quickest way to cut silence from the start of a voice memo, pull a quote from an interview, make a ringtone or shorten a clip to fit an upload limit.
This tool decodes the audio in your browser so you can pick precise start and end points, then saves the section. Where your browser can encode the original format, the result keeps it; otherwise it's saved as a widely supported format such as MP3, encoded with LAME compiled to WebAssembly. Lossless formats like WAV are cut exactly; lossy formats such as MP3 are re-encoded, which is a small extra loss at a good bitrate.
Your audio is processed on your device and never uploaded, which matters for private recordings, meetings and interviews. Very long recordings need memory to decode, so a computer handles multi-hour files more comfortably than a phone.
Popular uses
- Making ringtones and notification sounds
- Cutting silence from recordings
- Extracting quotes and clips from interviews and podcasts
- Shortening audio to fit upload limits
Tips for the best result
- Leave a fraction of a second before speech starts so words aren't clipped.
- Trim before compressing so you don't spend bytes on audio you'll cut.
- Keep the untrimmed original until you've checked the result.
- Listen to the start and end of the trimmed clip to make sure the cut lands where you want.
