Will the ZIP be bigger than the 7Z?

Usually, yes. 7-Zip's LZMA2 compression packs most files tighter than ZIP's Deflate, especially many similar files in one solid archive. The trade-off is that a ZIP opens on any device without installing 7-Zip.

Is anything lost in the conversion?

The files come out byte for byte the same and folders are kept. Modification dates aren't carried over (the files get the date of the conversion). Password-protected 7Z archives can't be converted yet.

7Z to ZIP Converter: what to know

7Z archives are compact but need 7-Zip or a similar app on most devices. ZIP is the format every operating system opens natively. This converter unpacks a 7Z archive in your browser and repacks its files and folders as a ZIP that anyone can open with a double-click.

The 7Z is decompressed by libarchive running as WebAssembly, which handles LZMA, LZMA2, BZip2 and Deflate archives and names in any language, and the ZIP is written with standard Deflate. File contents are copied exactly; already compressed files such as photos and videos are stored as they are rather than squeezed again. Nothing is uploaded at any point.

Because LZMA2 usually compresses better than Deflate, the ZIP will often be larger than the original 7Z, especially for archives of many similar text files. Modification dates aren't carried over by the WebAssembly reader, so files get the conversion date. Password-protected and split 7Z archives (.7z.001) aren't supported yet.

Tips for the best result
