CSV to TSV: what to know
CSV separates columns with commas, so any value with a comma in it has to be quoted. TSV separates columns with tabs, which almost never appear inside real data, so the result is simpler to paste into a spreadsheet or process line by line with command-line tools.
This converter parses the CSV properly before writing it: quoted fields, doubled quotes, commas and line breaks inside quotes, and comma, semicolon or pipe delimiters are all handled, with the delimiter detected for you. Each row is then written with tabs between the fields. A field is quoted only if it contains a tab, a quote or a line break, so most rows come out with no quotes at all. Blank lines are skipped and rows with too few fields are padded so every row has the same number of columns.
The output uses Windows-style line endings and keeps all text in Unicode. If the CSV has a header row, it stays the first row of the TSV.
Popular uses
- Pasting data into spreadsheet cells without an import dialog
- Processing data with cut, awk or other Unix tools
- Loading data into tools that expect tab-separated input
Tips for the best result
- If a column holds long text with line breaks, those fields will be quoted; some tools need them removed first.
- Check the preview to make sure the delimiter was detected correctly.
- Save the result with a .tsv or .txt extension, depending on what the receiving tool expects.
