TSV to CSV: what to know
TSV (tab-separated values) is what you get when you copy cells from a spreadsheet or export from many databases and scientific tools. CSV (comma-separated values) is the format most import forms and apps ask for. The two look alike, but switching between them takes more than replacing tabs with commas.
This converter reads each tab-separated row, then writes it as CSV following RFC 4180. Any field that contains a comma, a double quote or a line break is wrapped in quotes, and quotes inside it are doubled, so "Paris, France" stays one column. Quoted fields in the TSV are read correctly too. Blank lines are skipped, a byte order mark is removed, and rows with a different number of fields are padded and reported in the warnings.
You can choose the output delimiter: comma by default, or a semicolon or pipe for apps that expect them. Lines end with Windows-style line breaks, as the CSV standard specifies, and every spreadsheet and CSV parser reads them. All text stays Unicode, so accents and emoji pass through unchanged.
Popular uses
- Preparing a database or bioinformatics export for an import form
- Converting cells copied from a spreadsheet into a CSV file
- Switching a .tab or .tsv file to the format a tool expects
Tips for the best result
- Read the warnings: a row with a missing or extra field usually means a stray tab or line break in the data.
- Check the preview for columns that look shifted; that usually means a stray tab in the data.
- Use a semicolon delimiter for spreadsheet apps set to a European locale.
