CM to Inches: what to know
Centimeters are the everyday metric unit for short lengths, a hundredth of a meter. Inches are the US customary and imperial unit still used for screens, clothing, paper and hardware in the United States and, in places, the UK. To convert centimeters to inches, divide by 2.54.
That factor is exact. Since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, the inch has been defined as exactly 2.54 cm (25.4 mm), and NIST Handbook 44 lists it that way. So the only rounding in a cm to inches conversion is how many decimals you choose to keep. For example, 30 cm ÷ 2.54 = 11.811 inches, and 160 cm ÷ 2.54 = 62.992 inches, which is 5 feet 2.99 inches.
Inches are often written as fractions rather than decimals, especially on rulers and tape measures. To turn a decimal into the nearest sixteenth, multiply the decimal part by 16 and round. 45 cm is 17.717 inches, and 0.717 × 16 = 11.47, so about 17 11/16 inches.
