Inches to CM: what to know

Inches measure screens, TVs, tires, wrenches, waistbands and lumber across the United States, while most of the world reads lengths in centimeters. To convert inches to centimeters, multiply by 2.54. A 15.6-inch laptop screen is 39.62 cm diagonally, and a 32-inch waist is 81.28 cm.

The factor is not a rounded approximation. The international inch was fixed at exactly 2.54 cm by the 1959 international yard and pound agreement between the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, and NIST still uses that definition. Because the factor is exact, inches to cm results are exact too: 12 inches is 30.48 cm and 36 inches is 91.44 cm, with nothing lost to rounding.

Inch measurements often arrive as fractions. Convert the fraction to a decimal first (3/4 = 0.75, 5/16 = 0.3125), add the whole inches and multiply the total by 2.54. 10 3/4 inches is 10.75 × 2.54 = 27.305 cm. For feet and inches, multiply the feet by 12 and add the inches before converting.
