km/h to mph: what to know

Kilometers per hour (km/h) is the speed unit on road signs and speedometers in most of the world, while the United States and the UK post limits in miles per hour (mph). To convert, divide km/h by 1.609344, the exact number of kilometers in a mile (1 mile = 1609.344 m, from the 1959 international yard and pound agreement).

Worked examples: 30 km/h, a common city limit, is 18.64 mph; 80 km/h is 49.71 mph; 130 km/h, a motorway limit in several European countries, is 80.78 mph. For wind speed, 50 km/h is 31.07 mph.

Because the time unit is the hour in both, only the distance part changes, so the factor is the same as for km to miles. For other speed units, a knot is exactly 1.852 km/h and a meter per second is 3.6 km/h; the full unit converter includes both, along with feet per second.

Popular uses

  • Understanding speed limits when driving abroad
  • Converting car top speeds and spec sheets
  • Reading wind speeds in weather reports
  • Converting cycling and running speeds

Tips for the best result

  • Quick estimate: multiply km/h by 0.6, or by 5 and divide by 8.
  • Many speedometers show both scales; the inner ring is usually the second unit.
  • For pace (minutes per km or mile), convert the distance rather than the speed.
  • Speed cameras and limits are enforced in the local unit, so round down, not up, when converting a limit.
