LBS to KG: what to know

Pounds (lb, or lbs in plural) measure weight in the United States, and kilograms in nearly everywhere else. To convert pounds to kilograms, multiply by 0.45359237. That number is the legal definition of the international avoirdupois pound, agreed in 1959 and listed in NIST Handbook 44, so the result is exact.

Examples: 180 lb is 81.647 kg; 135 lb is 61.235 kg; a 45 lb barbell is 20.412 kg, which is why it is close to, but not the same as, a 20 kg Olympic bar. A recipe calling for 2 lb of flour needs 907.2 g.

The abbreviation lb comes from the Latin libra. For weights in pounds and ounces, divide the ounces by 16 and add them to the pounds before converting: 7 lb 8 oz = 7.5 lb = 3.402 kg. For stone (used in the UK and Ireland), multiply stones by 14 to get pounds first.

Popular uses

  • Converting body weight for metric medical forms
  • Translating US recipe and grocery weights
  • Comparing barbell and dumbbell weights
  • Converting baby and pet weights

Tips for the best result

  • Quick estimate: halve the pounds and subtract 10% (200 lb → 90 kg; exact 90.72 kg).
  • Keep two decimals for body weight; scales rarely read finer than 0.1 kg.
  • Troy pounds for precious metals are a different unit (0.3732417216 kg).
  • For luggage, convert the airline's limit into your scale's unit before packing, not after.
