MB to GB: what to know

Megabytes and gigabytes measure file sizes, storage and data plans. Under the SI decimal prefixes, which storage makers, mobile carriers, macOS, iOS and Android use, 1 GB is 1000 MB, so GB = MB ÷ 1000. A 750 MB video is 0.75 GB and 4,500 MB of photos is 4.5 GB.

Computers address memory in powers of two, so a binary set of units also exists. The IEC 80000-13 standard names them kibibyte (KiB, 1024 bytes), mebibyte (MiB, 1024 KiB) and gibibyte (GiB, 1024 MiB). By that convention 1 GiB is 1024 MiB, and 4,500 MiB is 4.395 GiB.

Windows File Explorer and many older programs calculate in binary but label the results "MB" and "GB". That is why a drive sold as 1 TB (1,000,000,000,000 bytes) appears as about 931 GB in Windows: it is 931.3 GiB. Nothing is missing; the same bytes are being counted with a different unit. This page uses decimal units by default; choose MiB and GiB in the list to match what Windows shows. RAM is always sold in binary sizes, so 16 GB of memory is really 16 GiB.

Popular uses

  • Checking whether files fit on a USB drive or in cloud storage
  • Tracking mobile data use against a plan
  • Estimating download and upload sizes
  • Understanding why Windows shows less space than the box says

Tips for the best result

  • Lowercase b means bits: 100 Mbit/s is 12.5 MB/s.
  • Leave headroom: file systems use some space for their own structures.
  • Use MiB and GiB when comparing with Windows or Linux tools that count in 1024s.
