PSI to Bar: what to know

Psi (pounds per square inch) is the US customary pressure unit for tires, air compressors and plumbing. The bar is a metric unit equal to exactly 100,000 pascals (SI Brochure), close to the air pressure at sea level. NIST SP 811 defines 1 psi as one pound-force per square inch, which works out to exactly 6894.757293168 Pa, so bar = psi × 0.06894757293168.

Worked examples: a car tire at 35 psi is 2.413 bar; a road bike tire at 90 psi is 6.205 bar; a compressor set to 120 psi is 8.274 bar; a 9-bar espresso extraction is 130.5 psi. In everyday use, 14.5 psi per bar is a good mental figure.

Most gauges read gauge pressure, the pressure above the surrounding air, sometimes written psig or barg. Absolute pressure (psia, bara) adds one atmosphere, about 14.7 psi or 1.013 bar. The conversion factor is the same for both, but don't mix a gauge value with an absolute one.

Popular uses

  • Converting car, bike and motorcycle tire pressures
  • Setting air compressors and pneumatic tools
  • Reading espresso machine and pump specs
  • Converting hydraulic and plumbing pressures

Tips for the best result

  • Quick estimate: divide psi by 14.5.
  • Check tire pressure cold; readings rise as tires warm up.
  • For weather pressure, use hPa or mbar in the full converter.
  • Inflate to the pressure on the door placard, not the maximum printed on the tire sidewall.
