Square Feet to Meters: what to know

Square feet (sq ft or ft²) measure floor area in US and UK property listings, while square meters (m²) are used nearly everywhere else. Because one foot is exactly 0.3048 m (1959 international yard and pound agreement), one square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 m², an exact figure. So square meters = square feet × 0.09290304.

Worked examples: a 1,200 sq ft apartment is 111.48 m²; a 12 × 12 foot bedroom is 144 sq ft, or 13.38 m²; a 2,500 sq ft house is 232.26 m². To go the other way, a square meter is about 10.764 square feet.

A common mistake is to divide square feet by 3.28 (the length factor). Area involves two dimensions, so the factor must be squared too: dividing 1,000 sq ft by 3.28 gives 304.9, far from the correct 92.9 m². If you only have a room's length and width, you can also convert each side to meters first and multiply them.

Popular uses
