Celsius to Fahrenheit: what to know
Celsius is the temperature scale of the metric system and of nearly every country's weather forecasts. Fahrenheit is still used for weather, cooking and medicine in the United States. The two scales have different zero points and different degree sizes, so the conversion is a formula rather than a single factor: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32.
The formula follows from two fixed points. Water freezes at 0 °C and 32 °F, and boils at 100 °C and 212 °F at standard atmospheric pressure, so 100 Celsius degrees span the same range as 180 Fahrenheit degrees, a ratio of 9/5. Worked examples: 20 °C × 1.8 = 36, plus 32 = 68 °F; 180 °C (an oven setting) is 356 °F; 37 °C is 98.6 °F.
Since 2019 the SI defines the Celsius scale through the kelvin: a temperature in °C is the kelvin value minus 273.15. The Celsius-Fahrenheit relationship is exact by definition, so any long decimals in a result come from the 9/5 ratio, not from measurement.
Popular uses
- Reading weather forecasts when traveling to the US
- Converting oven temperatures in recipes
- Checking body temperature on a Celsius thermometer
- Setting thermostats, pools and aquariums
Tips for the best result
- Quick estimate: double it and add 30. Exact: × 1.8 + 32.
- Temperature differences convert without the 32: a 10 °C rise is an 18 °F rise.
- -40 is the same in both scales.
