Fahrenheit to Celsius: what to know
Fahrenheit is the temperature scale used for weather, ovens and body temperature in the United States and a few other places; Celsius is used almost everywhere else. Because the scales have different zero points, you subtract first and then scale: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9.
The 32 removes the offset between the freezing points of water (32 °F and 0 °C), and the 5/9 accounts for the size of a degree: 180 Fahrenheit degrees separate freezing from boiling, against 100 Celsius degrees. Worked examples: 72 °F − 32 = 40, × 5/9 = 22.2 °C; 425 °F (a hot oven) is 218.3 °C; 98.6 °F is 37 °C; 0 °F is −17.8 °C.
Some results repeat forever, such as 50 °F = 10 °C exactly but 70 °F = 21.111... °C. That comes from dividing by 9, not from an approximation, and the converter shows up to 10 significant digits. For weather or cooking, rounding to the nearest whole degree is usually plenty.

- Converting US weather forecasts to Celsius
- Setting an oven from an American recipe
- Reading a Fahrenheit thermometer or thermostat
- Converting temperatures in science homework
Tips for the best result
- Quick estimate: subtract 30 and halve it (80 °F → 25 °C; exact 26.7 °C).
- A change of 9 °F equals a change of 5 °C.
- Fan ovens usually run about 20 °C cooler than the converted conventional setting.
